Engrossed

Friday, October 24th, 2008

As usual, sorry for my lack of posts lately, I’ve had other matters that needed more of my attention than I previously thought.

I’ve been working on a netcast (I hate the term ‘podcast’) with the guys from New Enthusiast and so far, things are working out really well. We’ve done a few test runs so far to see how the format works and if we can fine tune any of the sections. I’m hoping that we can put our first live netcast in a few weeks, so I will definitely link the details here once it is completed.

I’ve still been keeping tabs on what is going on in the world of gaming (of course!) but just haven’t really had much time to discuss topics here. Somehow, this shirt is rather apt at the moment.

But here are just some things that have captured my attention-

New Enthusiast

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

During a period of unemployment last year, a couple of journo buddies and myself decided to start up our own website based on tech/video games. While we had discussed the idea many times before, we had never actually taken the initial steps. An opportunity had finally presented itself to all of us to write about the stuff we were passionate about, instead of to someone else’s agenda.

To cut a long story short, I had to give up this idea because it took too long to get off the ground and I needed a job ASAP. In my absence though, the other lads forged ahead and completed the vision. The site is now finally live, New Enthusiast.

I’ve seen some great articles pop up there already and I would definitely recommend dropping by. Don’t forget to pat the alpacas.

Palliation

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Well, it seems the flatmate situation is sorted for the time being. I filled both available rooms with only a couple of days to spare.

I didn’t really have much choice in the end and I couldn’t be that picky; I basically had to take anyone that wasn’t a freak and could pay rent on time. Hopefully these guys stick around for some time, I’m not interested in moving again for some time, if I can get away with it.

I was chatting to Chippa on WoW yesterday (there’s a story behind me taking up the WoWz again… that’s a whole other entry!) and he mentioned that I hadn’t updated my blog in a while i.e. he missed my informative insights on all things video games. So, as I get back into the swing of things and start regular posting, I started looking through my comment spam that gets blocked and sits waiting for me to clear it occasionally. Just like The Game Dame recently mentioned, I get some pretty random and weird stuff in there. For example, this little gem-

Horse bestiality
Horse anatomy. Horse. Horse sex. BC horse council. Horse fucking. Horse cum…

Seriously. There’s no way I would be interested in anything resembling horse pr0n. Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zero.
That said, you have to wonder about the market for this type of fetish. Is it now considered a mainstream fetish, so much so, that it’s included in mass spam?

Weirdos.

So, stay tuned to the regular squirrel channel. As always, I’ll have lots to talk about.

Incredulousness

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

My life has been turned upside down of late. Flatmates have upped and left me in the lurch, I’ve been busily trying to find some new people to fill the spots in and around work hours. This doesn’t really leave me much time for anything else, hence the lack of posts.

I either have to find someone or move again. Definitely as a last option. The rental market in Sydney is driving me crazy.

Hopefully, I’ll be back on track again soon. There’s been so much interesting news too that I have wanted to talk about, post-E3, but that will have to wait until I get this shitstorm sorted.

Keep the dream alive…

Still alive, barely…

I’m still not 100%. I had to take a few days off work this week to try and get some rest.

I’ve seen some interesting stuff in the gaming news whilst I was unwell, but I felt too tired to write about it. Sorry.

Although I can provide a quick recap-

# Nolan Bushnell cites a new encryption chip, called TPM, that will be included on all major motherboards, as the the key to stopping game piracy.

“…in the games business we will be able to encrypt with an absolutely verifiable private key in the encryption world - which is uncrackable by people on the internet and by giving away passwords - which will allow for a huge market to develop in some of the areas where piracy has been a real problem.”

Sounds interesting. Definitely a different approach that the software-based solutions on the discs e.g. SecureROM, Starforce.

# Confirmed cuts of GTA IV between the AU/NZ versions to the UK version (which is the version I own). Most people will argue that if it does not impact on gameplay, then why bother with the unrestricted version? Simple. It’s a matter of principle. There’s no way I was going to pay full price for a game i.e. >$100 for a cut-down version of a game that every other adult in the world can experience. By importing, I saved myself approx $35 on the sticker price (going by prices at EB and GAME), had the game delivered to my door, and it was the unrestricted version. I will never buy another game from a retail point-of-sale ever again. There is no controlling the internet.

# Nintendo DS - How make it an awesome digital sketchbook. Wired has all the tricks.

Sick and tired

I have tonsillitis. I can barely function and need sleep.

That is all.
