Unleash the Force

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

Late last week, the demo for one of the most hotly anticipated Star Wars video games was released on XBL and PSN. Titled Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, this game is to be released across numerous gaming platforms; such as the PS3, X360, Wii, PSP, DS, second-generation N-Gage,iPhone, iPod Touch, and PlayStation 2. Force Unleashed is due to hit AU shores on 17/09/08.

I was originally interested in this game because initial reports suggested that this would be the ultimate lightsaber game for the Wii, that all Star Wars fans had been hoping for. But it seems someone over at Nintendo forgot to tell LucasArts they were developing a peripheral (Wii Motion Plus) to increase the accuracy of the Wiimote. This could seriously affect the gameplay mechanic and how responsive the Wiimote is. Of course, Lucasarts were unimpressed, to say the least. So for the meantime, I think I will pass on the Wii version and just purchase the X360 version instead. I downloaded the demo over XBL and I’ve probably played it approx. ten times since and I’m still finding different ways to smash stormtroopers. Good stuff.

Check out the trailer, complete with gameplay, below.

Club Nintendo AU

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

I have been waiting for this day for many years. On the 24th April 2008, Club Nintendo Australia was launched with the release of Mario Kart Wii.

I have envied other Nintendo fans across the pond for many years (except the fans in the US, they get nothing), annoyed that there was nothing of that ilk here in Australia. I think I was jealousy more than anything; that other fans could get their hands on limited edition swag that was only available through Club Nintendo and I couldn’t. The way the Club Nintendo system works is once you have become a member, you can gather a certain amount of points which can be gained by purchasing and registering games published by Nintendo. You can also register your Wii or DS for points, plus you can also tie your Club Nintendo account to your Wii console so that when you purchase any Virtual Console titles (or in the future, WiiWare), these will also count towards your overall points tally.

At the moment, the Club Nintendo Australia website is yet to be completed and only acts as a portal to register your recently purchased Mario Kart Wii or WiiFit. I have registered my copy of Mario Kart Wii and wait with anticipation on what Nintendo might offer first. But from what I have heard, the Australian club is setup very similar to the European club… you can check out their Stars Catalogue.

Korg on the DS

Monday, March 17th, 2008

Musicians serenading as gaming geeks finally have something to sing and dance about… Korg are just about to release a version of their DS-10 software for the Nintendo DS.

Never heard of Korg? Wiki describes it as-

Korg Corporation is a Japanese multinational corporation that manufactures electronic musical instruments and guitar tuners. The company is one of the most widely used and respected names in professional music worldwide.

It appears there were some concerns about this being only a Japanese release, but word on the official blog seems to point towards a worldwide release. Most of the entries listed there are in Japanese but the one and only English post confirms the news they are working on different versions for each territory.

My pants are now quivering with excitement. That is all, nothing more to see here…

Saw this over @ Wonderland

There’s a new video soft-mod player available for the DS, called DSVideo. It was originally a hack and has now been made available for free.

Just what is DSVideo?

DSVideo is a video player for the Nintendo DS console. An entire movie can be compressed into around 400MB.

Selling like hotcakes

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

Nintendo Australia has released a few of the latest sales figures for the Nintendo DS and the Wii.

According to the lads at Ausgamers, the Nintendo DS has sold 988,168 units and the Wii has sold 293,990 units since the platforms debuted. It was announced a couple of weeks ago that Microsoft had sold 300,000 Xbox 360 consoles in Australia and New Zealand combined, but individual figures for each country were not revealed.

Software sales for the Wii are also impressive, with controller/game combo Wii Play selling 114,600, Super Mario Galaxy selling 54,079 and Mario Party 8 selling 52,530 units.

Plus, you can only expect sales to increase once Wii Fit and the hotly anticipated Super Smash Bros. Brawl (which has only just recently been pushed back to a March ‘08 release date) are finally released to the market.
