Wii officially hacked

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

Some great news before the end of 2007 for gamers worldwide…

At this last weekend’s Chaos Communication Congress, a group of hackers demonstrated a hack for the Wii which allowed them to run software of their own design natively on the system.

This is the first official demonstration of this kind of hack on Nintendo’s Wii. You can definitely expect to see homebrew apps flooding the scene in 2008.

Happy Christmas ‘07!

Happy Christmas to all!

I hope Santa was good to you and brought you everything you wished for. I wished for a Wii Zapper but didn’t get one.

Nintendo AU’s Christmas spirit

Monday, December 24th, 2007

Just in time for Christmas, a story that warms us to the cockles of our heart.

The Geelong Advertiser ran a story this week about an 11-year old girl whose Christmas was infinitely better this year with the donation of a Wii console.

Taylor Smith, from Corio in Geelong, Victoria, was diagnosed with the degenerative muscle disease arthrogryposis at birth - she has limited movement in her arms and legs. Despite this unfortunate affliction, she has apparently exhibited a willingness to overcome her condition. A family friend, Tony Watkins, decided to see whether she was able to play his family’s Wii. He attached the Wii Remote to Smith’s using hair ties, and she found she was able to play.

Watkins wrote to Nintendo about the situation, and Nintendo responded by delivering a free console to Smith’s family home just before Christmas.

Another gamer is born…

Sales Charts w/e 16/12/07

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

For the keen eyed among you… that’s right, this week’s chart didn’t budge one inch. All of the titles have the exact same standing as last week. Either Gfk accidentally posted up the same charts from the previous week or this is legit. Weird.

I’m highly sceptical that The Simpsons was the top for Xmas 07 >_<

Thanks again to Gfk, this week’s sales reflect the week ending 16/12/07.

  1. The Simpsons Game - PS2
  2. Super Mario Galaxy - Wii
  3. Drawn To Life - DS
  4. Mario & Sonic at Olympics - Wii
  5. Call of Duty 4: Modern Combat - X360
  6. Need For Speed Pro Street - PS2
  7. The Simpsons Game - DS
  8. Smackdown vs RAW 2008 - PS2
  9. Halo 3 - X360
  10. Big Brain Academy Value - Wii

I think this is the last sales update from Gfk for 2007.
What will the future hold for 2008? Will there be another game like Halo 3 to smash the sales records wide open? We can only wait and see…

Head tracking VR display with a Wiimote

Friday, December 21st, 2007

This is seriously way cool. Mad props to Johnny Lee *tips hat*

Here is a brief description of what the device does-

Using the infrared camera in the Wii remote and a head mounted sensor bar (two IR LEDs), you can accurately track the location of your head and render view dependent images on the screen. This effectively transforms your display into a portal to a virtual environment. The display properly reacts to head and body movement as if it were a real window creating a realistic illusion of depth and space.
