Tax breaks for games

Friday, February 29th, 2008

There is no victory yet, only a confirmation that the government is willing to look at plans to pass on to Australian game developers the same tax breaks the Australian Film industry enjoys. If the politicians are forward-thinking i.e. they can look to the future and understand that this form of media is not going to go away, development of Australian companies can flourish as much as their film counterparts.

The possibility of government tax breaks for videogame developers in Australia took a step closer to realisation earlier today as Senator Stephen Conroy met with the Game Developers’ Association of Australia following up on a pre-election promise.

Senator Conroy had previously agreed to set up a high level committee to examine the tax rebate situation, and GDAA CEO Greg Bondar said after the meeting: “We were warmly greeted by the minister and he has commenced putting in place arrangements for the establishment of the high level committee at which game developers can put their case for a tax rebate.”

GoW2 news

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

Over at IGN AU, Patch was undoubtedly an excited lad when he had the chance to interview Marcus Fenix, the man himself. Well not actually Marcus Fenix, just John DiMaggio. He voices the character of Marcus and another well known character, Bender, from Futurama. John had this to say about the newly announced Gears of War 2-

“We’re doing Gears of War 2 right now; we’re in the middle of production. I’m reprising my role as Marcus again.” He continues, “I’m doing one of the characters, Franklin – those are the two that I’m reprising.”

He continues his enthusiasm towards the game, hinting that production has ramped up most aspects of the original tile. “Oh man, dude – there’s new weapons, new beasts, there’s a couple of new characters, and it’s just badass.”
