Out of Controller

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

If you have a vivid imagination and have always wanted to free the Nintendo characters, here is your chance to take them in a different direction than their natural surroundings.

We’re inviting you to paint, draw, sculpt, design, and go bananas with the Nintendo characters as they run wild in your imagination. What exactly do they get up to outside the game? You show us! The competition has over $4000 in cash and prizes to be won, as well as the exclusive chance to present a game idea to Nintendo Australia.

In addition to having the work on display at Melbourne’s FAD Gallery from September 10th – September 27th, submissions will be immortalised in an online gallery and in the printed collectible exhibition catalogue. The exhibition/competition is open to the public, encouraging Nintendo fans, young professionals in the arts and design communities as well as Game Designers/Developers in Australia. All 2D and 3D entries must be original and must respond to the Exhibition’s theme.

Key professionals have been invited to judge the winners out of the entries and will also be present to open the exhibition on Opening Night. These include Jason Hill (Games Editor, The Age), Greg Arthurton (Marketing Director, Nintendo Australia), Jeremy Yuille (Interaction Design Researcher, ACID), Anthony Hetrih, and Drew Taylor.

The Awards include:

  • Ultimate winner:  receives $2000 Cash + Wii Pack
  • Second prize: Nintendo Wii Pack
  • Third prize: Nintendo DS Pack

The Bonus Awards include:

  • Game Designer Prize: $500 + the chance to present a game idea to Nintendo Australia
  • Open Category: $500 + Nintendo DS Pack

Entry of work into the competition costs $20, with every entry receiving a special limited edition Nintendo merchandise gift pack. Entry forms and further information are available to download from outofcontroller.com.au.

All Entries must be sent in by the 15th of August 2008.

I’m really interested to see this exhibition, I may just have to make another journey south of the border again. If any of the entries are the calibre of when sprites and RL combine, this is a must see.

Sprite-themed shirts

Seen over at Sprite Stitch.

VG Sprite Shirts create hand-painted shirts, showcasing different 8-bit characters. There’s even a tutorial listed if you would like to get your hands dirty and give it a try.

Alice update

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

American McGee recently interviewed Scott Faye, a producer still toiling away on the Alice film, and quizzed him about the project’s current status, among other things-

As I’m sure you know, the big question on everyone’s mind is, what is the current status of the “Alice” movie project? What are the realistic chances of seeing the “Alice” film go into real production? What challenges are you faced with in getting it made?

SF: The Alice project is presently in “turnaround” from Universal Studios. Jon and Erich Hoeber have written a very compelling feature film screenplay adaptation of the Alice game. Their screenplay will certainly serve as a jumping off point as we find a new studio home for the project. In terms of the realistic chances of seeing the Alice project being produced, all I can say is that I have invested (along with Julie Yorn and Karen Lauder, my producing partners on the project) a lot of time and effort in this project. We will get it made. I offer my eight year effort to get the best version of the Max Payne film produced as proof of my tenacity as a film producer. Every film produced is a challenge. The major film studios are producing fewer movies every year, so to have one of them be yours is a very special experience. On the positive side, the Alice in Wonderland mythology is wonderfully compelling, and is an indelible concept in the minds of studio executives and the movie going public.

I just wish they would pull their finger and make this movie already. I really hope that they sign Chris Vrenna on for the score.

QIII Simpsons map

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Saw this over at Boing Boing.

Someone has painstakingly created the a Quake III map based on The Simpsons. There’s some serious detail in this map too, right down to the family portraits hanging on the wall, to the working scales in the bathroom.

I’m not a huge fan of Quake but this looks like it could be fun to play.

When sprites and RL combine

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

deviantART user, RETROnoob, has created a gallery of some interesting creations of when sprites and real life, collide. The Donkey Kong and any of the Mario Bros pics are definitely my favourites.

Cussing Qbert

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

Sprite Stitch have yet another cool X-stitch design, based on 1982 arcade game, Qbert.

The protagonist of the game, Q*bert, is a squat, orange character with a tubular nose and expressive eyes. Whenever he is caught by the enemy, a comical “swearing” bubble appears with “@!#?@!” (note that the “@” signs were originally simple “spiral” marks in the game). This is an early example of a video game character showing emotion, allowing players to identify with it.

Seems like a pretty simple design and could be completed rather quickly if you’re looking to knock over the project in a timely fashion.
